For most of the last century, the frames and the lenses in a pair of glasses were two different companies' business. Essilor grew out of an 1849 Paris cooperative of eyeglass makers, and under its old name, the Société des Lunetiers, it launched the Varilux progressive lens in 1959. Luxottica started in 1961 as Leonardo Del Vecchio's small workshop, then bought its way into American retail: LensCrafters in 1995, then Pearle Vision and the Target Optical licensed stores with Cole National in 2004. The two combined in 2018, which Del Vecchio described as finally putting frames and lenses under the same roof.
On an optometry board, EssilorLuxottica means its North American store brands, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, and Target Optical, and the people who staff them: licensed opticians and apprentices working toward the license, optometric technicians, and optometrists in the exam room. LensCrafters alone runs over 1,000 stores in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
