National Vision opened its first five Vision Centers inside Walmart stores in 1990 and signed a lease for 400 more four years later. That partnership ended in 2024, and the company now runs on its own brands: America's Best, Eyeglass World, Vista Optical stores inside Fred Meyer and on military exchanges, and the online Discount Contacts. Its company overview counts more than 1,200 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico and over 14,000 team members, a network of more than 2,000 optometrists among them.
Optometrists get a choice of setup here: employment with National Vision or, depending on the state, one of nearly 30 affiliated independent practices; a sublease to run your own practice inside or beside a store; or remote exams from home. The stores also hire opticians and optometric technicians, and National Vision operates its own optical labs.
